Fulbright Research Scholar: Alex Liu

Elk jaar kunnen ca 12 studenten een beurs winnen vanuit het Fulbright US studenten programma, om met deze beurs wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen in Nederland. Alex Lui heeft een dergelijke beurs gewonnen, en heeft ervoor gekozen om het komende jaar wetenschappelijk onderzoek te doen op de afdeling Neurochirurgie. Hij heeft als onderwerp “Brain Tumor Imaging”, met speciale belangstelling voor contraststudies en mate van resectie bij patienten met een Glioblastoma Multiforme.

Alex is a Texas native who recently finished his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and computer science at the Johns Hopkins University. He is currently in Nijmegen, sponsored by the Netherlands-America Foundation as a Fulbright Research Scholar. He will be working with Dr. Hadie Adams, continuing an brain tumor MRI segmentation project begun in 2010 with Dr. Adams at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Neurosurgery under Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa.
In the coming year, Alex plans to study the effects of scanners and contrast timing on image quality, as well as the effects of extent of resection on survival in Glioblastoma patients (project together with Dr. Hadie Adams and Dr. E. Kurt).

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed research projects or English Teaching Assistantships. The program facilitates cultural exchange, sending US students to host countries and vice versa. Annually, the Fulbright program selects 12-16 students out of hundred of applicants nationwide in areas of research in the arts and sciences in the arts and sciences to develop relationships in the Netherlands.
