Summerschool – Bridging the Gap between Students and Clinic

This 11th and 12th of July, a Summer School will be organized by a collaboration of Radboud Annals of Medical Students (RAMS) and the Neurosurgical Center Nijmegen (NCCN). A ticket for this programme has been granted to 25 highly motivated students, who are all enrolled in a (bio)medical study at Radboud University (Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Biology or Psychology). From many applicants, their motivation and experience were most impressive. Both bachelor and master students will participate; the established, experienced students will join the fresh, open-minded and we are confident that together, they will form a brilliant team.
RAMS is the first scientific medical journal in the Netherlands that is solely made for students by students. In addition to publishing journals quarterly, RAMS organizes symposia, workshops and Summer Schools to introduce (bio)medical students to the field of science and research and activate them to participate. In the summer of 2015, the department of Gastroenterology hosted over twenty ambitious students for the first RAMS Summer School, which turned out to be a great success.

This year, RAMS decided to aim on introducing students to a subject hardly studied by them. Neurosurgery is one of those subjects that is only marginally covered by the (bio)medical curricula at the Radboud University. RAMS and the department of Neurosurgery established a sustainable partnership to fill this gap and make students change perspective. Neurosurgery complements fascinating practice with innovative research, which will be of great value for every open-minded student. Furthermore, the NCCN is especially aware of its academic objectives and staff is always willing to educate new generations of health professionals.

After an introduction in the fascinating world of Neurosurgery by the head of the department, prof. Bartels, participants will attend an intense programme of lectures and practical assignments. Neuroanatomy will be reviewed in the dissecting rooms, computer programmes will be used to assess neuroanatomical structures and our neurosurgeons will give lectures on Nijmegen’s specialties, including neurovascular medicine, neuro-oncology, pediatric neurosurgery and functional neurosurgery. At the end of the Summer School, students write a short systematic review about a subject of choice that was covered during these days. They will be assisted by PeerPoint, a faculty research helpdesk. The second RAMS Summer School will end with a scientific pitch from the students and an informal gathering with drinks.

RAMS and the NCCN are confident that this Summer School will bridge the gap between university and clinic, between students and neurosurgeons. In this way, students from today can become the health professionals of tomorrow.
