D. Henssen

My name is Dylan Henssen and I was born in 1993, in Geleen, Limburg, The Netherlands. I have been studying medicine since 2011 at the Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands. During my studies I developed a specific interest in the human anatomy. After I received my bachelor’s degree in 2014, I started working at the department of Anatomy of the Radboud University Medical Centre as a junior-lecturer. Due to this specific experience, I further developed my teaching and researching skills. In 2015 I started with the final three years of my Medical Degree, which I prospect to receive in 2018.
Apart from my studies, I work as a PhD-candidate at the departments of Anatomy, Neurosurgery, Anaesthesiology, Pain and Palliative Care of the Radboud University Medical Center in collaboration with the Technical University Twente and the Donders Institute of Cognitive NeuroImaging. Together with the earlier-mentioned partners, I try to provide new insights in the neuroanatomy in patients suffering from chronic pain syndromes. Our special interest involves patients suffering from trigeminal neuropathy as the result of an intrinsic damage of nerve and/or brain tissue.

The aim of my PhD tract concerns the mapping of brain circuits, involved in the conduction of pain and temperature, especially those neuronal circuits of the head and neck region. By performing my researches, I try to improve functional neurosurgical treatments in patients suffering from chronic pain syndromes.
I would like to contribute to the translation of basal anatomical research to improved clinical neurosurgical treatments. Research expanding from the basic sciences to the bedside.
