Fellow Endovascular Neurosurgery

I am Doortje Engel. I grew up and studied medicine and did my Master of Neuroscience in Rotterdam. In 2008 I defended my PhD-thesis in traumatic brain injury. After that I left for Germany and Switzerland to become a neurosurgeon. During my training in Heidelberg (prof. A. Unterberg), Bern (prof. A. Raabe), St. Gallen (prof. Hildebrandt) and Tübingen (prof. Tatagiba) I was taught neurosurgery in its full width. I also did research in different areas (neurotrauma, skullbase, endoscopic and microsurgical training, hydrocephalus). Several grants made this research possible, like CTU Kanton St. Gall and the Olga Mayenfisch Foundation funded “mild traumatic brain injury” project in St. Gall (principal investigator; 2012 – 2014). In Tübingen my research project “non-invasive diagnostics for iNPH” is funded by the Tübingen Programm for the promotion of Women in Research (2016 – 2017) and an AKF-grant (applied clinical research fund; 2017 – 2019). Since 2015 I supervise 4 students for their doctoral research studies in Tübingen. Next to clinical and scientific activities I studied and completed a health care MBA (2011).

I discovered my passion for vascular neurosurgery during my Cranial Observership in Montreal, Canada (prof. Bojanowski, CHUM) in 2013. As of October 1st 2017 I started my fellowship for endo- and microvascular neurosurgery in Nijmegen, because this is one of the few places in Europe where I can learn both techniques at the same time (supervisors dr. J. de Vries and J. Boogaarts). I think that mastering and the ability to offer both techniques can lead to a more beneficial treatment of our neurovascular patients.

Areas of interest:
– cerebrovascular surgery and endovascular treatment of aneurysms, AVMs and other complex vascular malformations.
– hydrocephalus (especially NPH and IIH)
